Internet Safety: Savvy Parents are the Key

Text Box: Savvy Parent Series

A growing number of teens are using the internet as a means for social interaction and networking. Some have personal profiles on websites such as MySpace, Friendster, or Xanga, to name a few. Often they post pictures and personal information about themselves. But there are risks to sharing this information online.

Teens whose families have talked to them about online safety have less chance of having an IM name or pictures of themselves on the Internet compared to those who have not talked to them at all. The bottom line is when parents talk about on-line safety, children listen more often and are safer.

What can the Savvy Parent Do?

· Recognize that computer use is a privilege, not a necessity.

· Keep computer in a central location.

· Internet accounts should be in parent’s name with parent’s having the primary screen name and controlling passwords.

· Discuss how posting personal information on blogs, online diaries, and social networking sites puts them at risk.

· Learn the Lingo.

· Conduct periodic random checks; this is about supervision and protection not distrust!
