A Community Cure |
|
Drugs, violence, and crime once took over a place where children used to go for refuge. The area of Quintette suffered after their community center and park took a hit from Hurricane Ivan. The center used to be one of the few places kids could go and feel safe. Since the hurricane, the park was used for drug deals, getting high, gambling, and sexual activities. Instead of accepting the decline of their neighborhood, local youth took charge of their community. Almost 20 adolescents are leading “Youth on a Mission,” a program whose goal is to restore the Quintette Park to a place where the community can gather for healthy, violence and drug free activities. The teens are working to spread awareness about substance abuse and violence in order to build a stronger, more united community. The program works in conjunction with the Community Drug and Alcohol Council’s Project Boost - Quintette, a prevention program that works with the adults and youth of Quintette. |
